Every Twist and Every Turn

In the past two days, I realized how far I have come emotionally and mentally. Last semester was full of unexpected twists and turns and hospitalizations. I feel as if I am on such a better level than I was last semester. It feels like a fog has lifted. I know all of that is behind me and I am ready to step into the future God has planned for me.

I have some great news too!

My PTSD and paranoia seem to be much better in the past few days. I had less flashbacks, actually significantly less. In fact, the number of flashbacks I'm having each day is in the single digits, something that hasn't happened in probably over a year. Yesterday, I only had 5!

Yesterday, I was on my way to therapy when the song "Not For a Moment" by Meredith Andrews came on. I heard it once again last night in worship at my church. As I listened to the words, it really spoke to me about how good, gracious and merciful our God really is. It hit me how great God has been in my life and how I need to be grateful to Him for everything that's happened.

The chorus goes like this:

After all You are constant
After all You are only good
After all You are sovereign
Not for a moment will You forsake me

God is constant.

In this life, we may encounter ups and downs. In fact, we are almost guaranteed to. Last semester, I had four hospitalizations. I thought the road to recovery was impossible and yet, in a few days, I will celebrate five months without a hospitalization. Though our time here on earth may be full of turmoil, we can have faith that God never changes. He is constant. His love is always there for us. His peace is always there for us.

God is only good.

We also are bound to encounter evil things on this earth, but God is not a part of those things. He is purely good. Being good, He can change the negative things we go through for good. I grew a lot last semester having gone through so many difficulties. I had to lean on God more than ever before and in a different way than ever before, so my relationship with Him grew. I spent a lot of time with Him at the lake, growing in my faith every step of the way.

God is sovereign.

God rules over this earth. He is the divine Ruler. He is a just God. I feel like we shouldn't have any worries, knowing how powerful God is. Our lives are ultimately in His hands and He has great and wonderful plans for each of us.

Not for a moment will God forsake us.

Even though the roads in our lives may have a lot of twists and turns, God never leaves us. He is with us every step of the way, every twist and every turn. Step by step, day by day.

The Long Journey

“If we will not wait, we will not receive the many blessings the Lord intends for us. The Lord is not a God of quick fixes and fifteen-minute spiritual tune-ups, but a God of long-term, and indeed eternal promises.”
- Thomas D. Williams, Can God Be Trusted?

I have had many points in my life in which I was frustrated about how long it seemed that God was taking to answer my prayers.

Growing up, I was and still am the only person in my family who has not dealt with drug or alcohol addiction. As I watched drugs and alcohol tear my family apart, I spent countless hours praying and reading Scripture. I cannot even begin to tell you how many prayers I said for each of my family members.

Recently, my family has begun to come together and overcome the addictions. As frustrating as it was to pray for many years, it is very encouraging how far my family members have come.

However, my oldest brother committed suicide in 2007. After years of dealing drugs, spending many hours in various prisons across the East Coast and with the FBI after him at one point, he gave up the fight.

So did God not answer my prayers?

I believe He answered my prayers in an unexpected way. God used his death to do something wonderful…

His death brought my family together. Not just my immediate family, but my external family on my mother’s side, who had not talked to each other in many years.

God truly can take the worst situations and make something great out of them. Often, though, this is a very long process. I spent most of my life praying for my family and just in recent years, I have seen my prayers being answered.

I have been hospitalized nine times in the past seven years. In that same time, my doctors gave me 14 different medications. During my most recent hospitalizations, I had almost given up hope on my doctors ever finding the right medication.

But once again, God answered my prayers, even though it took seven years. The medication I am currently on has had very positive effects on me. I sleep better.  I think more clearly. I eat better. I am able to control my emotions easier. I am able to concentrate.

As frustrating as it is to wait for God to answer our prayers, when the victory comes, it is felt even stronger. The darker the pit, the more glorious the light of God looks. The more time we spend in despair, the more our hearts are full of joy when God's love shines through.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Facing the Giants. In this movie, a football coach faces various obstacles but he finds faith in God throughout the movie. At the end of the movie, one of his biggest prayers is answered. In a few words, he summarizes what it is like when God answers our prayers, no matter how long we have to wait: God, I’m overwhelmed.

One of my favorite passages in the Bible is Psalm 40:1-3

“I waited patiently for the Lord;
and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit,
out of the miry clay,
and set my feet upon a rock,
and established my goings.
And he hath put a new song in my mouth,
even praise unto our God:
many shall see it, and fear,
and shall trust in the Lord.”
–Psalm 40:1-3 (KJV)

I promise that if you wait for God to answer your prayers, knowing that He never gives up on you or abandons you, He will surprise you. He not only answers prayers but sometimes He answers prayers in a completely different way than you expected… most often much better than you expect.

Will you wait for His answers? What will you do as you wait?

The Beauty of Humility

My mother recently started texting me a Bible verse every morning. The verse my mom texted me this morning is one that many people know and quote.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.”
– Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

Many people know that the season of Lent began last week in preparation for Easter. I have been praying to God about what I should be giving up during this season and His answer has been somewhat difficult but I know it is so true.

He has been telling me to give up trying to get others to understand me. He has been telling me to get rid of my pride and focus on my weaknesses instead so that He can help me through them.

Something that I was thinking about a lot this morning was that in my freshman year of high school, I was placed in several remedial classes because of poor test scores I had received in my last year of middle school. Freshman year of high school, I was in no advanced courses. But I focused on my weaknesses and ended up taking 5 AP courses and 2 advanced courses my senior year of high school.

My peers thought I was absolutely crazy because there were only two other students that I can remember that were taking 5 AP courses in the entire school. Many of them did not know, however, that during this time I was living in a friend’s basement because my family had no home. I had to fight with my school district to stay in my high school because the summer before, I had been living in another town with a relative. They wanted me to attend the high school in that town, which was literally in the ghetto. Needless to say, I wanted to complete high school where I had been going for the past three years. During my senior year, I also lost my oldest brother to suicide.

To say that it was a difficult year is very much an understatement. But God continually has shown that during my times of extreme weakness, uncertainty, and pain, He transforms my weaknesses and gives me the strength to keep moving.

I would not be anywhere near where I am now if it wasn't for His continual strength, comfort and guidance in my life. In fact, I highly doubt I would still be here fighting. People say to me that I am a very strong person, but my strength comes from God. It is not by my own strength or willpower, but the strength of God that I continue to fight.

I have spent many years asking God to take away my pain and frustrated that I have to live with so much pain and through so many obstacles. But lately, even through this time of difficulty, I find myself begging God not to let my time end on this earth before His mission for me is done.

The following verse comes to mind when I think about the plans I have for myself, you know the plans everyone has- get a job, graduate college, get married, have children, get this much money, yada yada…

“A man's heart deviseth his way:
but the Lord directeth his steps.”
–Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)

We have so many plans for ourselves and that can create so much unnecessary stress in our lives. It’s when we hand our plans over to God and fully surrender our lives to Him that He can show us the wondrous plans He has in store for us on this earth.
